Piano and Voice lesson progression: In early age, I begin with piano and general music skills, which includes singing songs. As our brains and abilities grow, so do our capacities for understanding vocal technique. Here is a breakdown of what to expect with age.

Kindergarten and 1st grade: Piano skills using a set curriculum like Faber or Alfred, sol-fa, sing simple songs, introduction to performing on piano, learning to follow directions in a private lesson. This is very play based.

2nd - 5th grade: piano skills, music fundamentals, basics of singing, sol-fa, performing vocal or piano songs, beginning composition skills, ear training, warm up songs.

Middle School (6th-8th/9th): piano skills through curriculum level 3, ear training, music theory, composition skills, continue music fundamentals, performance etiquette, acting, diversity in vocal repertoire.

Early High School (9th and 10th): continue all principals from middle school with more intense focus on vocal technique, continue acting and interpretation skills, research of vocal literature.

Late High School (11th and 12th): firm performance goals and preparation for college, advanced music theory, sight singing, ear training/aural skills, music interpretation and research, vocal technique, firm study in classical voice.

Undergrad/young adult: Focus on applied music skills—audition prep, recital prep, original music, presentation skills.

Post college and beyond: stabilization, developing and continuing lasting technique.
